    Chit Chat ... 2011 edition

The old thread was getting really, really big, so I decided to shut it down and start up a new chatting thread ...

Good evening everyone! Hope everyone is staying warm, I know most of the country is frozen right now!

It's already in the low 20s here ... we're heading for mid-teens tonight! Brr...

GUELPH — Police are amazed that nobody was badly hurt in a seven-vehicle crash that closed Highway 401 shortly after 8 a.m.

It happened when a tractor-trailer hauling 30 tonnes of sand jackknifed near Guelph Line, swerved across the eastbound lanes and climbed the concrete median.

The wreck ended up straddling the median, with the cab in the westbound lanes and the trailer in the eastbound lanes. Six other vehicles on both sides of the highway were drawn into the crash.

“Out of all this, we have no serious injuries whatsoever,” said Const. Graham Williamson, of the Ontario Provincial Police. “It’s absolutely amazing.”

By 9:30 a.m. an outer lane had reopened in each direction. Traffic was lined up for kilometres in both directions. Motorists are advised to avoid Highway 401 and take side roads, due to a cleanup expected to take hours.

Police do not yet know why the driver hauling sand lost control. The tractor-trailer was heading eastbound.

As it jackknifed it collided with two eastbound cars. The cab then went up and over the concrete median, drawing up to three westbound cars into the mayhem. Crash debris tore out the oil pan of a passing Schneider’s tractor-trailer.

Ultimately, the crash involved up to five passenger cars on both sides of the highway plus two tractor-trailers.

The Ministry of the Environment has been notified due to the presence of 200 litres of leaked fuel. Sand carried by the tractor-trailer is heavy to remove but not hazardous.

“It’s going to be an operation to get this thing taken off the wall, because of the amount of weight,” Williamson said.

Wow ... I didn't see that wreck either. That's incredible. Glad no one was hurt. My only question is ... why was someone video taping out their windshield in the first place to catch that on camera?

:/ will do. Wow, does that mean it might have been warmer in ND the last couple of days than it was in NC, or IL? I know snow was melting today.

pshhh I go to work without a coat in that weather and roll down my window. I did that last week and that was about the temperature. What I don't like is when you go out and -20 feels normal. That happened two years ago for me. Thank goodness not this year.

You get much colder in ND so I figured you'd have a much better tolerance of it. But, yeah that is scary when -20 starts feeling normal.

I guess I'll be hibernating most of the week. The national weather service has issued a blizzard watch for my area . Some reports are saying this could be one of Chicagoland biggest winter storms, 18-22 inches of that white stuff.... but expect at least 12-18. Could be fun!!!

    * ACCUMULATIONS... TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS FROM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN EXCESS OF 12 INCHES IN NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS... AND IN EXCESS OF 18 INCHES OVER NORTHEAST AND EAST CENTRAL ILLINOIS... AS WELL AS NORTHWEST INDIANA. LOCAL AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 24 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN FAR NORTHWEST INDIANA... DEPENDING ON EXACTLY WHERE THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW BAND SETS UP AND HOW PERSISTENT IT IS OVER ANY ONE LOCATION.

oh my goodness Jenny.... that's so sad

Well, the latest weather update..... I think most of the meteorologists are scratching their heads with this approaching storm. There not sure what to predict. Earlier today predictions were 1-2 feet. Now this evening Chicago predictions are 20-31 inches of that lovely white stuff. I don't mind the white stuff, it's the 50MPH winds that I can do without. Poor Southern ILL is gonna get ICE. I'll take any amount of snow over ice any day.

Hey Andrew, I'll trade ya that 68 deg day for a blizzard.... OK
OK, I'll even trade ya the high of 39. I can't remember the last time it was 39 here.

Thanks Jenny.... I/we will. It is absolutely nasty out there. The winds are 34 mph gusting to 41 and we are having thunder snow.
    Good reason to hibernate.

Tommorrow it's supposed to be about 39 degrees........ below zero lol That's including the windchill.

Really I think that should be a frozen smiley hahaha. Just imagine how cold it would be without global warming lol

Of course here's a fun fact
ND does not have among the top 5 coldest temperatures in the US (-60)
ND does have among the top 5 hottest temperatures recorded in the US (121)*

*unless the record has been broken recently

Dog, You can keep that 39 degs below.
After the blizzard, tomorrow night our temps are dropping to -5 below zero and that's not counting the windchill. That will be nasty after getting all this snow.
